Patterns

Patterns

I make patterns.

I like to fold many of the same type of origami, of the same module, and glue them to a surface.

It’s fascinating how, from the same module, many patterns can be made.

The shape is the most important factor.

For example, the ninja star.

81 ninja stars, 5 concentric squares of different colours, 64 negative space squares in-between them.

This is the structure of the Portals I created.

This is "Portal Blue In", featured in the "Portal to Love" calendar 2024.

16 ninja stars, 1 square, 9 smaller negative space squares in-between.

This is a Matrix for me.

This is "Matrix Lime", featured in the Portal to Love Calendar.

In the negative space you can see squares for both the artworks above, but of different size.

The second most important factor is colour.

“Motivi”, an artwork I made recently, shows the four sides around the negative square, in four colours.

The ninja star is formed of two modules, two sheets of paper that can be of different colour.

An additional factor I can play with to find new variations.

What I love in this artwork is that if you concentrate on the square, you don’t see the ninja stars, and vice-versa.

This is "Motivi", it means "patterns" in Italian.

It is available to buy here.

I am fascinated by the meaning of words.

And I love it when the same word has more than one meaning.

We can philosophise starting from words.

So we have patterns and patterns.

Visual patterns and behaviour patterns.

Patterns we can see and touch on canvas, and life patterns.
